Research

Project opportunities

If you are unsure about where to start looking for research opportunities in design, these resources are here to help match students with specific projects.

Beehive: CoE Research Opportunities

Beehive is the College of Engineering clearinghouse for research positions, design projects, and even more creative opportunities. They help to match aspiring scholars with original investigations in a range of disciplines throughout engineering, including design.

Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program

URAP allows undergraduates to get hands-on research experience with faculty around campus. Projects related to design will show up in the Engineering, Design, and Technologies research category, as well as across many other disciplines.

Labs focused on design

To find research in specific labs, it is important to speak with the professors or grad students directly about their current research and potential need for undergraduate researchers on their projects. Below are two research institutes which students with interest in design may want to consider.

Berkeley Institute of Design

BiD is a research group that fosters a deeply interdisciplinary approach to design for the 21st century, spanning human-computer interaction, mechanical design, education, architecture and art practice.

Berkeley Center for New Media

BCNM is a focal point for research and teaching about new media, led by a highly trans-disciplinary community of 120 affiliated faculty, advisors, and scholars, from 35 UC Berkeley departments. If you are interested in doing research at the BCNM, fill out their form.
